KF Style game in Unity
« on: March 14, 2013, 03:19:15 pm »
Just for kicks, I am messing about with Unity as an engine for my next KF style adventure game.  For the sake of sales, it will not be called King's Field or take place in the KF universe (sadly) but it is a pet project that I suspect will take me a very very long time once I really get into it.

I was dabbling with some demo assets and making a scene, I will be posting additional vids later today, but here is one to see how it might look (low res capture).

Looks really nice. Unity has some easy to use map building tools.  What was that big "log" thing that fell down off to the side? It scared me!

Lol me too!  If you notice the camera jumped!

It was actually an object I had just placed on a hill that had come tumbling down from some default assets, I think it was an oil or big gas tank.

Here are some other assets I bought to pick apart the pieces and make a game sometime.  Pretty high quality stuff, though honestly guys, there is very little different between this and the stuff youre making with SOM, just a nice lighting system.  If you guys ever get into Unity, I can help you mod your current models for static objects to look like this, I think you would be surprised how easy it is.

Just to prove my point, here are the assets with a non reflective lighting system, more similar to the ambient lighting of SOM, as you can see, literally no difference in these vs the stuff thats going in some of the modern SOM titles.

Very cool! I've actually been interested in getting into Unity for a while, but I've got a couple of projects I want to wrap up in Java first. ;)

Wow, lighting makes quite a difference. Real-time lighting isn't included with free unity, right?

Yes, but that is more or less for updated shadow casting (which is cpu heavy anyhow).  What you can do with Unity free is bake the lighting in using the same calculations for a static version of the dynamic light, in other words the lighting looks as good it just wont cast real time shadows.  You can also use light probes to add semi dynamic lighting.

Just for the record, Dark Slayer is going to have much better shadows than this :ninja:
