Trouble w/ Windows Xbox Controller

Sorry if this has been addressed before.  I got a new laptop and finally get to delve into the amazing library from Sword of Moonlight!  I bought myself a wireless (but using wired) Xbox controller and am trying to start Kings Field 1.  In the game I'm doing button mapping, and for some reason the rear bumpers aren't mapping properly.  L2 & R2.

I was going to use them for Magic and Attack respectively, however, I'd settle for Look Down Look Up.  Using either bumper, nothing happens no matter what I assign to them.

I don't want to assume the hardware is defective, I assume it's software related, but that's why I'm asking.

For KF1 am I going to have to lose two buttons basically?
