Title: Recommended Games!
Post by: Verdite on March 13, 2010, 08:13:17 am
Hey guys, i thought this kind of topic woulda been started already but i cant see one. Maybe im not looking hard enough?  :rainbow: So i thought id start one here.

Just post your favourite games or games you would recommend. You can include all kinds of games from mmorpg to puzzle based. Anything goes!

Ill start off with a few... People probably will have heard of some. These "reviews" are all based on my opinion and dont represent any of the games officially or professionally.

Blood will tell (ps2)

A strange game based around recovering the characters true body. You get benefits for each body part and demon hunting is a vital asset in the game. You can also find lots of swords in this game, and its a game that seems to have been overlooked somewhat. It is kind of Japanese based so alot of monsters etc are based around the Japanese culture. I am not sure if there are any western characters of items in the game.

Return to Krondor (PC)

An old game which is a sequel to the equally good Betrayal at Krondor. (DOS)
You start off with a squire and build up your team up. You find important NPCs along the way of the game who often join your party. Theres alot of item hunting in this game, and alot of randomly spawned battles. The best part for me is looking for items in the city of Krondor.

Might and magic VI, VII, VIII (pc)

Might and magic VI is an old school first person rpg. You create your own team and take them adventuring in a free form rpg where you can select quests and main quests at random. (Providing you meet the people etc.)
Again, its setting is Medieval, but there are some twists in the game that i personally like. This is an amusing game with lots of item hunting, and character building.
Might and magic VII is essentially an "improvement" certainly graphics wise, you have more options in this game and the interface is much easier to handle. You also get a castle.
Might and magic VIII is probably the most advanced of all the games, but i personally prefer VI. In this game you can hunt for more items, weapons etc and have more character options.

Mount and blade (pc)

Mount and blade is a great medieval game that mixes a good deal of rts and rp. I cant say much about it other than it is a very detailed, fun game to play with lots of mods to keep you going.

Well i hope people add to the list and maybe this list has been some help to anyone bored who fancies a new challenge.

Well Dungeon Master and chaos strikes back is alwase a good play, Albeit very old. There are alot of different monsters and I love the spell cast system.
The dungeon siege's are good as well. D&D, Baldurs gate for the gamecube I found to be exceptionally fun as well.

Krondor is one of the few exploration based games produced by Westerners I can remember being really satisfying. My brother played all the sequels/follow ups I believe. The second seemed kinda like a step down visually at least to me, the 3rd I think was a more contemporary nostalgia milking production which you may or may not count as a sequel. The game play did not appear open in the 3rd game (ie. it was like the original PSOne Resident Evil, aka Biohazard, setups.)

Another game that set well with me was System Shock. A contemporary follow up to that was also made which I've yet to try (not expecting much) ...System Shock would even make an interesting Som game.

I'm really not a fan of contemporary Japanese themes (obsessions?) per say, but the Japanese generally know how to make a game that feels cohesive, and in the art dept solid. Where Western games typically are either oversimplified and inconsistent/unappealing visually or overwhelming and floundering. For example I picked up two big/questionable PS3 titles yesterday marked down to 17$. MGS4 and Fallout3. MGS4 so far has pleasantly surprised me, Fallout has been a bit of a disappointment (though I was not expecting much after trying Oblivion out on my 360) ...MGS4 seems like the most refined MG game yet / probably the most indicative of the series. The cutscenes are more bloated than ever, but otherwise even if you're not a fan of big budget games it's clearly a milestone of some sort in gaming history. Fallout3 seems equally ambitious and intriguing... I mean who doesn't want to navigate a nuclear wasteland, it seems innovative... picking things up with the right analog stick (something I'd just setup for myself for playing KF games) feels very intuitive. However the game itself is really a mess. The camera is a nightmare, the 3rd person avatar does not jump/walk as much as slide thru air and over things, the beginning scene where you're practically forced into a fist fight with a gang in the hallways (why is there only ever one dignified answer to your dialog choices?) is like flailing bodies just rubbing up against one another... without the pause/target feature being constantly fired it's completely unplayable. Fallout feels more like a simulation on rails that you're forced to play wearing mittens (I'm sure it might feel less linear if I ever get that far)

Don't get me wrong, the Japanese produce a ton of crap too, and esthetically 90% of Japanese games might as well come from another planet / dimension where the rules of good taste do not apply. But when it comes to gaming all else aside they seem to know what the hell they're doing... even the cheapass games (that don't exist outside Japan) are playable. On the other hand the poor Westerners just don't seem to know how to make playable games with more than 4 buttons (not counting keyboards) ...furthermore Japanese games are wacky as all hell, and world wide production quality is at an all time low, but that doesn't absolve/explain away why even the best assets in Western games have a way of just being ugly (proportions/composition anyone?)

Maybe I'm just trying to say Westerners as a whole are very weak on fundamentals. Even if you take a game that appears to be esthetically ok like Fallout here, it doesn't have legs to stand on... but then where is its Japanese counterpart? There probably isn't one. However an unplayable game is still an unplayable game. Kudos for experimentation, but next time save everyone the trouble and go back to school first please. (PS: I might yet play/enjoy this Fallout more but it's clearly crippled in so many depts and my personal tendency is to leave cripples to die by the roadside)

EDITED: Time well spent.

I picked up MGS4 a while ago, played it for a few hours and took it back. I simply couldnt come to terms with the absurdly derranged psychotic creatures that randomly turn up (like something from spiderman or a cartoon like that) yes, its dangerous, mysterious, but doesnt it sometimes say to you... Power rangers?

I know people feel comfortable growing up and around possibly somewhat derranged cartoon characters who have an extra arm / leg to shoot a laser from, adding something new and promoting longevity until beaten () but MGS4 seems to have taken it too far. I just couldnt come to terms with those bosses which i knew id probably have to face off against later in the game.

I swerved fallout because the scenario isnt for me personally, i just saw it as being an oblivion with guns. Yes i noticed that in Japan the department stores have a huge array of odd looking games, though i think those games can often serve as a distraction to the workaholic.

Another recommendation id add (much to many peoples dismay possibly) is castlevania 64. There was a good atmos on that game, with interesting features, however basic! Possibly its just the nostalgia coming out.

Though i can highly recommend a game called "Planescape torment" possibly one of the best "weird" games by bioware, well worth a look into.

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows...for the PC or xbox.

If you like exploration, this game really does offer up a huge play time.  Its not new, but the graphics aren't terribly out of date just yet.

Its more stealth kills etc (tenchu like perhaps) than straight up combat, but they did an extremely good job with the backgrounds, and your interaction with them.  The game focuses well on being stealthy, making sure you stay in darker areas, stay quiet etc.  I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of adventure.

I believe a 4th game in the series in the works.
----------------------------------------------------------

Summoner 1 and 2 for the PS2.

I think these may have seen versions released for the PC, but they were solid games for the PS2.  They offer up lots of hours of playtime and satisfying exploration and advancement.  Summoner 1 was more PC play style and Summoner 2 was a bit more action RPG like, but I really liked them both alot.

----------------------------------------------------------

I can think of a ton of cool games that were probably never mainstream, if you guys tell me what consoles you have and what style games youre into I can make some suggestions.

I could recommend so many games so I won't try. I do think MGS4 would've sold much better if you could control the cinematics like a movie (including table of contents) and there was an option to use 10x shorter movies instead (that's not a joke, I think there could've been two different sets of movies... one for people with shit to do, and the other for people who care... not passing any judgment on either crowd, but MGS4 is really like a game/movie hybrid, or extended video game trailer CGI movie)

I had the exact same reaction the first time the freaks were trodded out, but it's like Mega Man (aka Rock Man) ie. every MG game has these, it's both an inside joke and the essence of the series, so you gotta let it slide. I was a little disappointed it went the current Hollywood trend route of making them all black / visually interchangeable. I do think the games would probably be better without this, but then I wonder if it would still be MG. As usual the freaks looks scary, but their one weakness is bullets.

I would not be apologizing for MGS, but 4 I think redeems the series to a large degree. It's unusual I think for a sequel to feel so much more essential than the original. FF4 really captured the essence of FF I think (albeit worst gameplay ever) ...too bad 4 was not the magic number for KF.

Fuck it, speaking of Rock Man...

I happened to login to the J-PSN the other night and it was the first night Rock Man 10 was up and for only 1000yen (you know that had to be a promotional price, ie. 10) ....apparently it hit the Wii a couple weeks earlier and was going hit the 360 by the end of the month. I waited for it to pop up on the US PSN because I have a policy of not blowing yen on stuff I can buy with dollars, but for now I've settled with the demo (I haven't finished 9 yet... Wiley's Castle is insane) because it dawned on... PSN/Live/Virtual Console or whatever, has got to the be the best business model the industry has ever seen. Think about it, Capcom can get a small team together and produce this measly little title that would've been impressive in the 80s for probably next to nothing (compared to any contemporary blockbuster) toss it out on PSN which is pretty much impossible to crack for 10$ and you'd have to imagine in no time the cash flying in would cover the salaries of everyone that produced it and Capcom is reaping insane profits...

Of course on the flip side in theory any indie team could churn this game out and surely someone would notice its quality and it would sky rocket and that team would get the same kind of revenue influx as Capcom. But really I can't think of ever seeing an indie game that didn't look like cheap crap. And hell I'm sure a lot went into playtesting 10, and Rock Man deserves something of a legacy, and maybe Capcom is in the red and could use a boost, but damned if I don't feel like a sucker reflexively plopping 10$ into that coin shoot

Is this (http://www.arxfatalis-online.com/index_eng.php) the game? Or a newer online version of the game?

Damn, apparently it only casts 5$ on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/1700/) ...I might have to look into this Steam thing.

I think I will give it a shot, if I'm lucky it might play in 3D with this new VR headset that's come into my life

I got my game copy from gog.com

It's just a dollar more, and integrated with the newest patch, which wasn't even included in any store bought versions.

....not to mention, tweaked for today's systems.

Well Steam was about as slow as a steamboat downloading... so that just about killed my impulse. I will get around to trying it... the screenshots anyway look more like a KF game than anything I can recall, and there's nothing there so ridiculous looking I can just dismiss it out of hand, so for 5$ yeah I'll definitely pencil it in. I couldn't find anything else remotely interesting on Steam with an attractive price point. Fortunately you don't have to pay for the service, just the downloads.

I don't remember my Krondor looking like the one in the screenshot (previous page) ...or is that not Betrayal at Krondor??

I'm currently preoccupied with Wizardry: Torawareshi Tamashii no Meikyuu (The Labyrinth of Lost Souls) and RayStorm HD. Both are Japanese PSN titles. I think RayStorm HD has been available on the 360 (in the US) for a while... but it's not on the US PSN yet, go figure. The Wizardry DLC interface to the PlayStation Store is translated into English even though no items are available to buy (from the [North] American Store) yet.

I was playing Jaseiken Necromancer but I'm stuck and possibly the only English speaking person in the world playing it

I purchased Grandia tonight. I'm not sure what to expect but it looked unique enough to try out.

Offtopic: reading reviews for a few games tonight, I'm always floored by how many gamers think European/American companies make Japanese video games. Probably more reviews of Japanese video games on Gamefaqs than not attribute full credit to the Western company that licensed it / possibly made some miniscule changes.

Ah this is the sequel to Betrayal at krondor. Rtk was certainly improved graphics wise  :smug:

But i still loved Bak and Gorath (one of the main characters.)

I thought Betrayal looked light years better than any of the other games.... especially Return

I think I probably totally discount the games that are not Betrayal.

BTW, finally finished downloading Grandia (was multi-disc) ...I'm not sure how it's possible I never played/knew what this game was about. I haven't gotten into it yet (a difficult genre for me to just pick up) but the intro and opening antics indicate (in my judgment) this may be the best done game in this genre of all time. Other than the script just being way above par for a video game the best draw for me is it's like what if the technology used to create the game was available in the 80s, because the game totally feels like an 80s classic.... which is amazing because it was published in 1997.

I'm playing the original (Japanese) ...if you've ever enjoyed a traditional Japanese RPG you owe it to yourself to check this game out. I'm kind of glad I didn't play the hell out of it when I was younger because I'll probably enjoy it more now. My only worries is the maps are huge and NPCs are everywhere while it's hard to get a sense for your surroundings because the camera is quite low and spins about. Select button lets you see a birds eye view of the entire map though. Somehow I lucked out and stumbled upon the first save point just in time (without being forced to wade thru excessive setup dialog)

Did u play betrayal at all? Remember anything about it?

I also! Recommend these games!  :rainbow:

Conan (Dos) its available for dl somewhere... Side scrolling for the most part and very fun. Very atmospheric. Interesting how the older games feel so much friendlier and original... You play as conan... And slay things, find items and unlock doors. I reccomend this game to anyone mainly because its original and fun, and it holds true to the original conan style in my opinion.

Another game i recommend is Ryu ga gotoku: Kenzan! anyone familiar with the yakuza games will recognise it instantly, its a japanese import... There are loads of screenies out there. Its a Japanese medieval style game with a very brutal (in my opinion, again) combat system. I wont go into the details, but the game is very good indeed with many funny stories, and rewarding quests. The story is pretty good too. Though anyone who doesnt like hefty gore and brutal attacks should dodge it. Also anyone who cant read nihongo (japanese) should maybe contemplate gamefaqs if you really want to try it. The best part for me is the turtle racing, where you bet on turtles. Sounds absurd, but its very, very addictive. And of course the lush environments.

Finally, for any of you who havent played this game, i really really recommend it. Its called Mount and Blade, its a war centric game with side quests and a good character development engine, possibly the longevity behind it is the mods, you can download and play all kinds of great new games that are very entertaining. You have a party which you develop, troop paths, heroes and morale are all part of it... And you fight, of course...

I dont want to spoil it for anyone because i picked up this game and loved it.

If anyone plays it or looks into it let me know, i can help.

I played Betrayal a couple times at least beginning to end. It was actually my first real PC game as a kid afaik.

I've been really enjoying Grandia lately. The artwork anyway is worth putting up with the usual CRPG monotony. The NPC count is really high. It feels like the place is really alive but it's probably the first such RPG like this where I've not made a practice to exhaustively seek out every bit of NPC dialog. The NPCs almost never say anything important anyway, so it's not like talking to NPCs is required by any stretch (except when it's obvious)

Because of all the NPCs and because it's available in the US PSN store I purchased the translated game and am playing that one. The voice acting is not weird but it feels like random people were just pulled off the street and given one shot at each line. I don't know if that is more distracting than a crap voice actor trying to act or not. The atmosphere is really un-japanese, the character names are English even in the Japanese game more or less and it doesn't totally feel like a Japanese game that much. It could've been an 80s saturday morning cartoon in the states (even though all of those were also made in Japan!! Even GI.Joe for example afaik)

I will play the Japanese game if I play it again sometime. Funny thing is, after I did the research/decided if I want to buy/play this game or not, like a week later even though the game had been in the US stores for a long time, a promotional trailer was released as a movie download. So I would've ended up playing Grandia either way it seems?! I love PSN because I like spending 6~10$ on a game that'll probably be at least 80hrs of enjoyment. I wonder if the game industry has lost its mind though, outright giving people 80hrs of a good game for 10$ (in Grandia's case) when really they want you to be spending 60$ apiece for three 20hr games instead

Hmmm, never heard of a Turkish made video game before. How do you control the game? I think I will recommend it to my brother. He's always been into historical PC games. The Warband sounds more interesting. I would maybe pick it out of a bargain bin on a lark now. How much does it cost on Steam? It doesn't look like a budget title.

Well warband was released this year.  There was 66% off yesterday... Dunno what the price is now. Mount and blade is great fun. Dont forget thats theres two versions... Mount and blade, and Mount and blade: Warband. Warband has multiplayer, but Mount and blade has more mods (atm.)

You control the character with mouse and wasd keys. Left click to attack, right to block. You recruit peasants and train them into warriors. After each battle, you recover part of the loot from troops you defeated. Theres an overview map... You roam around doing as you wish, taking on quests or raiding, or defending.

All trial versions can be found here.

If you want to play a great samurai mod for 0.903 its below. There are new versions but this is the most stable.

I've got a new troop tree that i made for that mod if anyones interested...

I found a guide (http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~yamachin/necroman/necro0.htm) for Jaseiken Necromancer!!

No wonder I was stuck. Apparently there are some phantom walls you gotta walk thru, and apparently the last event I did hinted at one that is necessary to finish the game. I don't know if the dialogue for the hint is replayable or not.

Also learned that an item I figured could only be equipped by characters I chose not to play with which I sold (inventory space is severely at a premium) after carrying it around the whole game opens up a special dungeon (probably by using it over a nondescript square of land) which houses the best armor/helmet in the game... only slightly better than what you can buy but can be equipped by characters which otherwise can't wear better armor.

The spirit of this game really sticks with me. Maybe just because I can't think of a single other fantasy CRPG that comes more from the horror school of esthetics. KF is pretty horror-ish, but more like Castlevania or Vampire Hunter D. Of course Castlevania and KF are neither CRPGs. Despite it's primitive nature it has a lot going for it in the gameplay dept. and the challenge level (especially if you choose any of the many irresistible "extra baggage" characters is quite high)

The story synopsis on wikipedia (ja) actually makes it sound quite intriguing... Google translated:

Romina Kane hero save during the trip. Cane sword arm was expected, look for lime and chaos with evil necromancer Seiken, to travel down the sky Demon King Azathoth. Romina and join the chase after the man and three Maisuto. Go underground and have to destroy demons Taronesu contaminated water, and there lay the bodies of Hawke Maisuto brother. After the war, Cain asked the king to dispose of more than someone who Necromancer was a trip back in proportion to Romina.

I'm thinking somehow it might be fun to adapt to a Som game because I don't think the world would ever fully appreciate it without such drastic measures. The only trouble is it's hard to imagine without the multi-character element. I thought about trying to make it an experimental rail shooter where the two party mates orbit the player Cho Aniki (or R-Type if you prefer) style. But I'm feeling more like it would be more interesting (and not very difficult) to map out the entire world and try to integrate the extra characters somehow and eventually make it full blown Secret of Mana style networked multiplayer someday (probably not using the original Som runtimes)

PS: It also has appeal I think because the Necromancer would fit snuggly into the pantheon of epic KF swords. Like KF it's a game centered around a single sword.

^Apparently the story synopsis there is from a 1989 manga which appears to be based on the game rather than vice versa. Ordering (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/488063509X/ref=dp_change_lang?ie=UTF8&language=en_JP) a copy might be the only way to see it. The author was a "hentai" pioneer but it's hard to imagine a manga based upon a Hudson game being salacious or even risque. Though it did have an adult (bloody/realistic) esthetic and the PC-Engine lineage of consoles are well known for their nudey games, but I can't think of an Hudson games with pornographic elements.

There was also a Jaseiken 2 released as a mobile phone game not long ago (which I was aware of) but it does not look at all interesting or anything like the original frankly. About as far off base as possible.

EDITED: Man I knew software sells outside Japan were banned, but even none of the book sellers on amazon.co.jp will ship international anymore :/

That is the only game I've thought about buying in the PSN store. Since you recommend it, I will probably give it a shot. Especially because my Japan account is pretty tapped out, and the dollar to yen exchange rate is miserable right now.

EDITED: Oh yeah, the US store has a 15th anniversary thing going on that includes half off pricing for a small selection of Classics games that change out every two days or so. I'll probably wait until that ends, in case I can save 6$ on the two Medievil titles :cheapo:

I think medievil is the best looking game ive seen on the psp.

There are some firsts is the US PSN store today.

There are actually two Japanese imports on sell (billed as being "completely unaltered" as if that was a feature) ...I actually already purchased both of these (Cho Aniki and Gaia Seed -- both shmups) from the J store... I'm guessing only fairly straightforward games will be released this way, but it's a first. Gaia Seed actually plays in Engrish by default I think. It made me realize I'm not so crazy about the PSOne classic pricing. 6$ seems way too much for a PSOne game. The Japanese prices only seem good to me because it's cheaper/easier than importing.

Also Sonic Adventure from the Dreamcast is on sell for 10$. I hope this will pave the way for more Sega console titles. Dreamcast games tend to be a lot more work to gain access to than most... and a lot of the games are quality / better than the sum of their ports. Don't see Sonic on sale in the Japan store. I wonder if Wii's Virtual Console is sporting Sega games... seems like that would be an odd fit given the old rivalry.

I would find me a Wii if only for the Virtual Console because the little ****ers play full burn at about 1/20th the electricity the PS3 (and 360) requires to download an update. But the Wii is region locked!? So ****it. Speaking of which the fact that the PS3 ever wants to download shit in the foreground (considering the power/heat it uses/generates) really makes me angry

PS: SOTN and Castlevania Chronicles (not on the J store lineup BTW) were finally dropped from the sale bin. In their place is some low rated track and field game... seriously, WTF PSN US (or NA, or whatever) ?!

I'm not a big fan of N64. Would not have had one as a kid except our grandparents thought they were doing us a big solid by springing an N64 on us one xmas.

I was not crazy about Castlevania "64". As I recall I gave up trying to make sense of the hedge maze / Frankenstein monster scenario. I'm not really so nuts about the Castlevania series. The original game though was the first we ever owned, even before we had a Nintendo. I think I'm more in love with the atmosphere / central tropes. 2 is probably my favorite.

Starfox was really good on N64 and we played a lot of multi-player Golden Eye. Some of the games like the jetski one were not bad.

I've picked Mirror's Edge (my personal corporate sponsored spiritual successor to KING'S FIELD) up again here lately. The goal I think I've set for myself is just to "qualify" for all of the time trial courses before I will let myself put the game down for good in good conscience.

Anyway... just thought it was interesting, I usually look thru the weekly qualifying times for a ghost to race against. A lot of the server features like weekly best times seem to be down or something, so it may be a false indicator... but anyway there are only like 5 people on any given course that seem to have been seriously playing the game that week. The time trials are really the meat of the game, but it's possible a lot more people are just not playing the time trials, or the DLC courses (which are the ones I've been playing lately) but it just came as a shock to me that a game you see on store shelves would only have like 5 people playing it world wide on any given week.

I know it's past the launch window but it's still the same game, and easily in the top 5 best PS3 games (in my list anyway)

It also bothers me that a huge corporations like EA don't even support the online features indefinitely. Unless the game studio/producers are bankrupt it's a scandal I think for any game to go offline ever. It bothers me corporations would release a game without a commitment to support the online features forever. In the case of consoles, the console manufacturer should have a responsibility to carry on if the game companies are unable. From what I understand it's even very common for wholly online games like MMO's to go offline after a year or two

Your Onin no ran fighting style is similar to mine. I guess that avoid-and-snipe style is necessary when fighting large groups of enemies.

Dont mean to necro, thought id add one game given that most other games ive played have been dire since i started this thread.

Wizardry: Tale of the forsaken land

Bought this when i bought TAC , didnt work so i rebought it and its great! Developed by Atlus.

Like women who dont wear enough clothes? :sweatdrop: Er, I mean... Who are rogues? You'l see plenty in the game.

The game feels like KF but you are restricted movement wise. The equipment doesnt have individual graphics in the inventory, but weapon graphics change when you attack an enemy (turn based) its generally a decent game with heavy text.

Wizardry: TFL is definitely one of my favorite all-time PS2 games. It has some excellent enemy models/animations and an intelligent, enthralling story. There was a sequel in Japan (Busin 0) (http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/918608-busin-0-wizardry-alternative-neo) which I really hope to translate someday. I imported a copy, but there's only so many hours in a day  :goodnight:

King's Field for the PS1!!!!1 Wait ... :P

But really, have some game recommendations:

The Longest Journey - A point & click adventure game for the PC. Or should I say, THE point & click adventure game? The story, dialogue and visuals in this gem of an adventure is just incredible, and despite being over 15 years old now, it is still considered to be one of the very best adventure games to date!

Kuri Kuri Mix - A From Software title for the PS2, I posted a thread on this a little while ago. So much fun playing together with a friend! Can't recommend it enough!

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven - Fantastic stealth action game for the PS2, where you are rewarded for doing stealth kills instead of just fighting. Very cool! I can't say much about the rest of this series, but if this game is any indication, the other games should be well worth playing as well! Published by From Software, actually.

I'll probably come up with some more later! :)

I've played several games on that list and they were definitely good ones. I was actually playing Syberia recently -it's amazing that a game so old still looks so good. It's too bad more games don't use rendered art backgrounds.

Ark of the Ages is the name of it.

Imagine Fruit Ninja and King's Field Additional having a love child - this game would be it.  Its only $1.99 (a complete steal if you ask me) and works great on my ancient 2.2 Android Phone.

I just finished Everblue on my PS2! :D

This is certainly what I would call a hidden gem, especially if you're an adventure gamer! You take on the role of Leo, who's more or less coerced by his childhood friend to dive in search of ship wrecks and the treasures they hold. You soon come across a strange, jewel like object, and it seems to be related to stories about a curse on the ocean itself.

The game uses a point & click interface when you're in the town. The NPCs in town serve multiple purposes: Some are collector's whom you can give objects you find in return for eventual rewards; Some are merchants who will sell and buy goods; Some are there purely to help along the story or add some lore to the world; And some are there with more specialized purposes, like synthesizing of items, auctions, or for taking you out to sea, where the main gameplay is.

The main gameplay is underwater exploration, which happens in first person. When just having left the town, and diving more or less randomly in the sea, it's easy to get a bit annoyed by the fact that you can't move your character or the camera up or down. This annoyed me as well, until I realized that this part of the gameplay was more like a "world map" than anything else. And being able to move vertically there is not even needed, anyway. You basically swim about underwater, and you can use a sonar to look for treasure. The type of items the sonar reacts to depends on the "elements" you equip it with - so you can have it find metal and glass items, or wood and clay items, etc. These elements are items you need to find or purchase to be able to use. Soon you will also find sunken ships which you can enter, and when you do, that's where the real gameplay lies.

Once you've entered a ship, you have full maneuverability: You can now also move up and down with both your character and the camera as you wish. You can also pick up almost any item you can find, although not everything is possible to pick up at first due to there being limits to how much you are able to carry. Once you get better gear(which can improve the amount of oxygen and stamina you have, how much you can carry, how deep you can dive without freezing, and how fast and maneuverable you are), you are also able to take larger and heavier stuff with you. Your stamina will also improve by time.

For those who enjoy games where you've got collectables that you can complete, there's certainly more than enough of that in this game, as well. You've got titles which are given to you by different people based on things you do(dive down X amount of meters, find a certain treasure, etc.), coins that are given to you as a token of trust and friendship, and collectors who want one of every item of specific types(for example, one guy wants to taste all the different types of liquor you can get). These things are all optional though, and you don't need to do them at all if you're not into it.

There's certainly more than enough to do in this game, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys exploring and treasure hunting in games!

Guyra I think you summed it up really well there! I havent completed Everblue yet but its a really nice game with a very laid back feel to it - almost a 'feel good' game. Unless you are brave and tackle the dark depths - honestly if there were enemies in that game and one jumped out at me from the dark recesses I would have jumped out of my chair.

I've completed Thief 1 and 2 and played a bit of 3 which I wasnt too fond of.

Grabbed diablo 3 for ps3 a month or so ago and been playing on n off here n there. I thought the colours were wonderful, very vivid and the background art was great. the gameplay was just like the others. get stuff, kill things, get better stuff, kill more things etc lol ... plenty of rare and unique items and new classes to choose from. It's still a lot of fun :)

I have 32 years
I played hundreds of games in various consoles and in pc. Im very critic about games. I must said that some olds are better than news.
Final fantasy 7(1997) for example until today there's no other rpg with tons of mini games(gold salcer),animal farm(chocobo), summons, coliseum, huge map, huge list of monsters, huge list of magics, one of the best stories in rpg history and the best villain in history of rpgs(sephiroth).
I don't have ps3 or xbox 360 yet so in future maybe i can update here.

My list of games worth playing:

Tecmo deception series for psx, ps2 and ps3/psvita
Final fantasy 7, 9, 10 (psx and ps2)
might and magic 7,8,9,10, dark messiah (pc)
diablo 1 and 2 (pc)
wizardry 7 crusader of the dark savant(pc)
wizardry 8(pc)
phantasy star 1(master system)
Miracle warrior(master system)
Gladiator begins(psp)
dungeon maker 1 and 2(psp)
Way of the samurai 1 and 2(ps2 and psp)
mount and blade series(pc)
x-man(atari) not the marvel x-men
Xenoblade(wii)
Radiata stories(ps2)
way of the sword(ps2)
ephemeral fantasia(ps2)
Suikoden 2(psx) and 3(psp)
call of duty modern warfare series(wii)
stunts(pc dos game)
pokemon series

It's interesting that you leave Final Fantasy 8 off the list. I was quite disappointed when it came out but everyone else at the time seemed to think it great. It wasn't until years later that I started to hear people say it wasn't as good as other FF titles. The characters weren't as interesting as other FF games and the gameplay was too simple.

There are several other games on your list that I thought were good: Wizardry 8 was amazing, Mount and Blade is one of my favorites too. A member here (Verdite) likes it too and is a character in the Mount and Blade Brytenwalda mod.  Gladiator Begins, Radiata Stories both good.  :beerchug:

Huh, I didn't see this thread before... I only have 14 years of gaming experience (Hell, I've only been alive for 17 years...) but I've played some gems in that time.

I'll list them by console since there's a ton...

Playstation:
Darkstone - A Diablo type game, it's really fun if you can get past the odd bug.
Battle Hunter - A simple strategy game, released as part of a budget series... Surprisingly good for a cheep game. AMAZING soundtrack. Also released as 'The Hunter AR-0062' in Europe.
Medievil - A fun and comical hack and slash adventure game.
Medievil 2 - A good sequel to the original.
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - It's been a VERY long time since I've played this one through, but it's good from what I can remember.
Crash Bandicoot 2 - If you haven't heard of this, I need to question where you've been...
Hexen - 'Cute' little hack and slash, with a fun soundtrack.
Final Fantasy 5 - I never really hear people mention this one, but I thought it was great.
Vagrant Story - This takes a firm place on my favorite games, and I totally recommend it if you've not played it. Stop everything you're doing, and play this game... The lore is rich, the world is captivating and the system is legendary... The OST is just beautiful..

Playstation 2:
Champions of Norrath - Kinda like the Dark Alliance games, really good fun IF you play with someone else.
Champions: Return to Arms - It's sequel to the previous game.
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy - A really good game to play with multiple people, still fun if you play by yourself!
Final Fantasy 12 - A good addition to the FF series.
Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land - First person dungeon crawler, I don't have much to say about it.

Xbox 360:
Fable II - A VERY good game. I personally love the sound track for this one... TOTALLY recommended.
Final Fantasy 13 - If you can get past comparing it too the previous games, and you can put through with the painfully long linear sections... You're in for a good experience game.

PC:
Legend of Grimrock - This is a great reboot the old dungeon crawling style of game.
Amnesia: The Dark Decent - A decent horror game, with a very nice story.
Penumbra (Series) - Really fun horror games, by the makes of the above game.
Temple of Elemental Evil - This is a really fun game, it's very truthful to 3.5 D&D rules.
Neverwinter Nights - Great game, single player and multiplayer.
Project Zomboid - If you're into survival games, or zombie games... This is a MUST... It's an amazing game.

NES:
Sweet Home - This is the only game I've played for NES, it's an amazing game, it uses everything the NES had so well... It was only released in japan, but you can find a translated ROM on the internet.
Title: Re: Recommended Games!
Post by: duredure on December 04, 2013, 12:19:50 pm
FF8 was too linear. FF9 they tried to do a ff7 clone but fail badly. The history wasn't good enough and they forgot to add a gold salcer in ff 9. There's a final fantasy in psp(final fantasy type 0) that some fans are translating (skycloud team) and is already 50%! they said that in 3-4 months is ready to play in psp. I heard from a lot people that this FF is almost good as FF7 so I don't want die before play this next year.

Currently there's three mega hyper master blaster japaneses games  in translation progress for psp.

Final fantasy type 0(psp), samurai dou 2(psp but there's a english version in ps2 named way of the samurai 2) and for psx/psp/xperia play the brigandine Ge!

Jesus...I forgot to put in my list elders scroll series, ephemeral fantasia and suikoden 2 and 3.
ephemeral fantasia is a hidden gem from ps2 like radiata stories is very dynamic. Read the faq or see some youtube videos about it.
suikoden 2 is the second best rpg from psx after only ff7. Luca blight the vilain from suikoden 2 is as bad as sephiroth.
Suikoden 3 in my opinion is the best suikoden and the best rpg from ps2. Who played it knows. they create a very nice history and gameplay like in ff7 and sometimes you think " wow this game could have a movie". Also suikoden 3 is the only suikoden to have random  hard bosses. Also in the end of suikoden 3 when you finished to recruit all 108 stars and build your castle to max there's tons of stuff and mini games/sidequests to do like gold saucer in ff7.

Wizardry 7 is better than wizardry 8 In my rpg :beerchug: opinion.
I played wizardry 7 for more than 10 years when I had 15 years and never finished in that time because I hadn's no idea what to do later in game. So some years ago with internet and google I managed to found a solution and finaly finished the game 4 years ago.

Darkstone! I had a lot of fun with that one too- especially for a $10 budget release.  The thief character was the most fun. I remember laughing when I stole a spear weapon from a snake enemy.  Gotta wonder where he was keeping it!

Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land was an excellent title too. It had a Japan-only sequel which I would love to translate, but I won't have time in the foreseeable future.

I loved Suikoden 3 also. I think the way it told the story from different views was quite interesting and it kept things feeling fresh. Final Fantasy 9 did that too I think.

A title that is usually overlooked is Giants: Citizen Kabuto (http://www.gog.com/game/giants_citizen_kabuto) for PS2 and PC. The title sounds weird, but it's actually quite funny and has good gameplay. I wrote a review for it once HERE (http://gametz.com/Review/2072.html).

I'll keep an eye on tha FF 0 translation. Looks interesting! Thanks  :beerchug:

trapt (new deception)  for ps2
also there's a new deception 4 for ps3 and psvita

I tell to you guys is all in english all this games. Worth play and replay because is always diferent. I played Kagero Deception 2 for the PS and liked the gameplay mechanics, but I found the storyline kind of disturbing. I just couldn't get into mercilessly and slowly killing off a bunch of innocent victims. Does Kagero 1 or 3 have a less sadistic plot?

A fair number of the games mentioned here are available cheap on GOG.com so I thought I'd post links in case anyone wanted to pick one up. For anyone who doesn't know, GOG.com (Good Old Games) sells DRM-free games at a low price and has a lot of classic titles that have been tweaked to run on modern systems and they usually come with bonus stuff like sound track or concept art.  Not to sound like a commercial, but in my opinion, GOG is one of the best things that has happened to computer gaming ever. They actually seem to care about giving customers an honest and good product for an unbeatable price. They're giving away Fallout 1,2 and Tactics for FREE right now.

LOl
I just forgot another excellent game that I played a lot.

Tactics ogre for psx. (there's also a upgraded version for psp with lots new stuff but I prefer the old from psx because is more adult and not anime like). I remember that took me around 100-120 hours to finish all the game in 100%(all hellgate twice).
In tactics ogre you can't finish only following the story you need train your army because 1-2 levels below monsters level can get u in a huge problem.
In my opinion is better and more adult than final fantasy tactics. Also tactics ogre is the father of ff tactics.

there's also ogre battle but I don't like too much.

Thanks John for spending time linking those games. RTK means alot to me because it was the first RPG game I played. Its a damn shame that Pyrotechnix didnt make a sequel for it... Anyway anyone who likes a good story, decent () voice acting and a good item / stat system should check it out.

Okay I feel I should add these. They are third person games, and reviews suffer somewhat from die hard 2d castlevania fans. I really enjoyed these games.

Castlevania: lament of innocence

Odd title, but amazing game with the graphics pushed to the max on a PS2 game.
Lots of items and secrets, good story, some small puzzles and lots of free roaming.
Combat is easy to learn, but takes time to master along with learning new techniques.
It features a beautiful, haunting soundtrack...  (http://youtu.be/uQhLG4dOk7o)
The type you dont forget easily. The best part of it is that it is consistent and composed by one artist.
The protagonist is a noble and interesting character too, probably one of my fave Castlevania protagonists.

Castlevania: curse of darkness

Very similar to LOI but features a new character, who can summon beasts to do his bidding.
Slightly less immersive plot compared to LOI, but new features make up for that.
Crafting items is simple and materials are abundant, but if you want to make something really special you'l have to grind.
Steal items from enemies, it requires timing.
Amazing summoning system, keeping you interested from start to finish. Lots of quirky abilities like the ability to ride on your summon allow you to reach secret areas. Commanding your summon is quick and easy.
Great soundtrack, less haunting.

The only thing that slightly spoils these games is the over use of bright colours and the game lacks shadows.

A game that was recomended already is mount  & blade warband.
And this month was released a new patch 1.2 of a mod for this game Called clash of kings that is actually Game of thrones inside mount and blade!

Worth play.

Dont forget Gekokujo for MnB warband is out soon!

I recommend Dark Cloud to those looking for a great PS2 dungeon crawler. It's an early PS2 RPG with really innovative townbuilding mechanics mixed with randomly generated dungeons. Great game if you give it the time.

Yeah, I liked Dark Cloud! Dark Cloud 2 was similar but even better in my opinion.

That reminded me of good a game with a similar art style: Steambot Chronicles by Atlus. I originally played it's demo which was quite dry, but the actual game was pleasantly surprising with a good story, decent customization and pretty fun action battles. Its kind of a cross between Armored Core and kingdom Hearts if that makes any sense

I quit playing wii because I bought ps3 two weeks ago.
I recommend this games on wii:
xenoblade Huge map, over 300 sidequests, a lot of random bosses, easy 200h+ full gameplay or 100h to only history.
last story: is a big rpg game not big as xenoblade but is a must play on wii.
tales of symphonia   you can befriend of monsters like pokemon, and also has a great and solid story.
fishing resourt: the best fishing game ever made. Imagine a Gta + fish. Huge areas, hundreds of diferents fishs, and baits, etc. You can ride skate, bicicle cayak, etc...
wii sports resourt.
family ski & snowboard: Best snowboard/skii game ever made.
call of duty warfare: I prefer using wii mote in cod than dualshock on ps3.
godfather: I prefer using wii mote in cod than dualshock on ps3.
dead rising: funny and hardcore gta like with zombies.

Now I bought a lot ps3 games:

I recommend this:

Dogma dragon arise: In my opinion until now is the best rpg on ps3.
way of the samurai 3 and 4: Is a must have on ps3. the best game of samurai ever made
skirim,oblivion: must have
assassin creed black flag: Ok, I never liked assassin creed. But this game is wonderful and totally worth buying.
Terraria: when you learn how to play you can't stop.

I go update more ps3 recommended soon.

Those looking for a sprawling open-ended western RPG should look no further than Daggerfall. Don't even bother with any of it's sequels, I mean, Skyrim's world map is about the size of Daggerfall City, HAHA! Seriously though, it's easily the best RPG I have ever played, and it has such a large feature set that encourages actual role-playing, it's the little stuff like criminal trials and the advanced banking system that really makes Daggerfall awesome. The dungeons are HUGE too, most of the time it can take upwards to around 2-3 hours to fully explore a single dungeon in this game, that's as long as a Metal Gear Solid cutscene!

Anyway, I always found it funny how Morrowind was praised on release for removing about 90% of the features present in Daggerfall, it's too bad there isn't an HD mod for this game that would make it more appealing to look at for a modern audience...

Daggerfall was a truly epic game. It would be great if someone does a HD remake.

Bethesda Software made Daggerfall a free download (http://download.cnet.com/The-Elder-Scrolls-Chapter-II-Daggerfall/3000-7536_4-10964310.html) a while back, as they did with the earlier Elder Scrolls game Arena.

I played all star ocean releases in psx, ps2 and right now im with almost 35 hours of gameplay in star ocean last hope for ps3.
There's tons of post game stuff,  nice battles(not boring), colesseum, synthetic weapons, armors, itens and all that you imagine, pickpocket skill to use in npc, huge maps,  bunny races, very very funny npcs(I love Welch. she's crazy and funny like stifler from american pie), all star oceans had good story and good dialogs.

Must play!

So my playing on ps3:

So after finished this great and fun  rpg star ocean(I gave up in post game because massive freezes) . I finished red dead revolver nightmare(with zombies) and red dead revolver redemption. Both are the best open world gta style wild west game. So if you like gta you need play this games too.
After I played and finished game of thrones rpg. The gameplay is hard, multiple endings. Lots of armor and weapons to use and they change ur costume in cut scenes and in battles too. There's a arena to you play too. Game has some flaws but worth play and if you'r got fan you go like even more.

Now I'm playing dragon crown. Dude I never Imagine that this game would be so great( is from atlus and vanillaware). Imagine a  old arcade game dungeon & dragons arcade today. Tons of extra stuff. Totally worth!!!

Ok finished dragon crown unlocked almost everything.
And started playing way of samurai 4 on ps3(they go release on pc this year too)
I'm a huge fan of way of samurai series since ps2. Acquire always did good games shinobido, tenchu, gladiator begins, what i did to deserve this my lord, and many others.
way of samurai 1 and 2 for ps2 and psp is a must play game.
Way of samurai 3 I didn't like so much and jumped to way of samurai 4.
Until now 83"s hours of gameplay and loving!!!10 different endings, tons of stuff to unlock.
for me is the best action game for ps3.

master of monster lair from ds(it's the dungeon maker from psp +-)
you can create your own dungeon and there's lots of rooms, and huge areas to you put inside ur dungeon. There's 20 floors. 20 bosses. more than 100 kind of monsters that enter in ur dungeon random times. The ds version is turn based. the psp version is action based.
So if you have a psp play dungeon maker 1, dungeon maker 2(10 times better than 1)
If you have a ds play master of monster lair.

About the way of samurai 4 for ps3. I finaly finished around 90% of all unlocked stuff and my total gameplay was 153 hours. ( there's 2 dlc but I go let to buy in future)

It's not related to xenogear. but it's 10000x times better. It's the best game on wii.
There's a sequel for wii u called Xenoblade chronicles going to be relased very soon.
they said that the maps is going to be a lot bigger than xenoblade 1. There's some videos on youtube. It's awesome.

Too bad I don't have a Wii PS3. Is Xenoblade connected to the Xenosaga series?

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/09/08/way-of-the-samurai-4-coming-to-pc-via-steam

Imagine how manys mods we can find after some time ;P

I can only say one tip for u bro. forget dungeon maker 1 and play first dungeon maker 2 first.
dungeon maker 1 from psp is very good as I a told before. But dungeon maker 2 is a whole new upgrade and totally more addicted with lots of differences from Dm1.

After you finish the game you unlock other char to play with totaly other skills and weapons. I find interesting in this game the drop rate of weapons, eggs, etc. It's very similar a mmorgs in pc with extremely low rate. Except quest items.
You can get most of monsters to fight  along you. For this you need kill lots of the same monsters and they go drop egg. I mean very rare!! So they can keep you playing. there's too 20 floors to you build and plus more 20+ with totally random monsters called ruins.
There's too special elemental floors that you need put special elementals to certain monsters started appear. You need put rooms a little away from main stair to monsters start appear. You can put opened chests deep in your dungeon after many rooms(probably the best is near corner very far from stair. So monsters go stay in ur room with chest and you can get some items from it.
There's also a special teleport that sometimes appear in your floor and you can fight all monsters only with your monster alone and is harder in later floors.
there's a dungeon maker 3 too called nanatama chronicle of dungeon maker I saw some gameplay videos and appear to be very darker than previous Dungeon makers. but the game is in japanese and impossible for me to play =s;

Psp had excelents games too bad psp age is over.
Ps vita don't have even 20% good games or 10% of  library of psp.

It's great that Samurai 4 is being released for PC.

A sequel has been released to one of the games mentioned earlier in this thread - Legend of Grimlock 2. I played the first one and it was definitely in my "worth playing" category.  It's a fantasy themed puzzle, exploration, RPG where you control a group of characters. The main selling point to me was that the puzzles were laid out intelligently and the combat was well balanced and interesting.

So far, the sequel seems to be getting great reviews. If anyone wants to check it out, you can find it HERE.  (http://www.gog.com/game/legend_of_grimrock_2?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=game_subject&utm_campaign=legend_of_grimrock_2)

PS This description from a review for Grimlock 2 reminded me of the gameplay from King's Field. Maybe that's why I like this game:
Quote
...there are no side quests, main quests, NPCs, doing chores for others, conversation etc. This way the game has a survival feeling to it, where its you against the island Love that focus.

So I was playing gta 5 and planning to get 100%(takes around 100 hours of gameplay). And suddenly I heard some people saying about a new game to ps3 called rogue legacy. I bought and for mine surprise I stopped playing gta 5 for now and I'm playing rogue legacy for 15 days in a row. Why?

Because I fu...love castlevania games(not the 3d ones) and love creative rpg games.
Rogue legacy is a mix of dark souls + castlevania. This game have similar looking of android games BUT  It's not like stupid this android games. This game is so creative and unique like patapon was for psp.

Every time you enter in the castle is generated a new dungeon with different monsters. Everytime you die( you can die in the first 2 minutes or in some hours) you left a heir and he go keep some status and new abilities from your dead father. This game can be played in ps3,ps4,psvita, pc and linux.
I go copy some stuff to u guys see.

" The goal of Rogue Legacy is to explore a randomly generated dungeon, defeat four bosses in each of the four unique environments of the dungeon, and then defeat the final boss. Characters have the default ability to jump and slash with their sword, along with secondary abilities, such as magic attacks, which use mana.

Whenever a character dies as a result of losing all of their Hit Points (HP), control will transfer over to one of three randomly generated heirs which the player may choose between, though this number may be increased to six with a later upgrade. Each descendant carries their unique characteristics and abilities, including such genetic peculiarities as color-blindness (in which the game is presented in black and white), ADHD (in which the player moves faster) and dwarfism (in which the character is short and can fit into small gaps).

Gold found while exploring the castle is passed onto that character's heir and can be used to improve the abilities of any successive heirs. Gold can be found by smashing pieces of furniture, opening chests, or defeating enemies. There are also various fairy chests hidden throughout the castle, most of which require the player to complete an objective, such as taking no damage, in order to open.

Spending gold on the manor, which appears after a new heir is chosen, can increase stats, such as health and mana, and unlock and upgrade new classes that may be carried by one of the heirs. These include mages, which can use more advanced spells, warriors, who have higher strength, and assassins, who can use various stealth techniques and perform critical hits.

Gold can also unlock the blacksmith, the enchantress and the architect, who each provide their own services. The blacksmith can use blueprints found in the castle to create new armor and equipment for the player, improving their stats. Similarly, the enchantress can use runes found in fairy chests to give the player enhancements, unlocking additional abilities such as double jumping and dashing. Finally, the architect can lock down the design of a previously encountered castle (so that a new one isn't randomly generated) in exchange for a percentage of any gold found.

Any unspent gold must be paid to Charon in order to enter the castle, though upgrades can reduce the amount required to pay "

here's the list of games that I really like

PC
Black and White 1/2 <--- amazing. you can raise your own creature. and you can teach it anything.
Mount and Blade WarBand
Elder Scrolls V

Consoles/Handheld
Brigandine (PSX)
Chrono Trigger (PSX/NDS/Snes)
SMT: Persona 3 (PS2/PSP)
SMT: Persona 4 (PS2/Vita)
Monster Hunter Series (PSP/3DS)
Armored Core Series (PSX/PS2/PSP)
Way of the Samurai 3/4 (PS3)
Rogue Galaxy (PS2)
Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)

-Xenogears (PSX) would be there if the 2nd disc wasn't so disappointing
-the only thing that I like about FFs is their story. the content of the games isn't so spectacular, at least for me. and most FF have a low replayability(sp?) value too

I'm sure there's still more, but these are all that I can think of atm.

Just a heads up. The game "Mount and Blade" has been mentioned by several people in this list. Gog.com is giving it away free for a short time only.  You can find the offer a little way down on the gog.com (http://gog.com) main page.

Mount and Blade Warband (the sequel) is a better game and has more fan mods, but the original M&B isn't a bad place to start if you've never tried the series. Warband is on sale also!  :1zhelp:

So, I'm a big adventure fan, and I'm also a huge fan of the The Longest Journey saga. (The first game is pretty much the best pointy clicky ever, and I've played quite a few!) Recently, the original game got released on iOS - I'm hoping for an Android release, so I can play it on my Note 4, myself.

But even better, the first chapter of the five episode sequel(third game in the series) came out late last year, and the next episode will most likely be out well within the next two months. And despite having waited six bloody years for the next game in the series, they made such an incredibly good game that exceeded my expectations by far! That is, the first episode alone did that, so I'm pretty hyped about the future episodes! :D

(Also, the main writer and game designer left his secure job at Funcom to start up an indie studio, Red Thread Games, for this purpose alone. That takes a lot of courage and determination!)

The Longest Journey is basically up there with King's Field, for me. :D

Vandal hearts . Anybody played?

Vandal Hearts was one of my favorite PS1 games. It combined good story and solid characters with challenging gameplay. Vandal Hearts 2 was okay, but the "friend and foe act at the same time" mechanic made the battles way too predictable

I didn't know there was a PS3 pre-quel. The reviews seem lukewarm. Is it any good?
Title: Re: Recommended Games!

Vandal heart 2 was horrible. No idea why they tried change a good game into that.
I didn't bought vandal heart 3 yet. But it's in my huge waiting list. I'm finishing atm the trilogy FF for ps3(Final fantasy lightining returns last chapter). I hope start playing natural doctrine after that or finish skirim and oblivion.
I tried watch all scenes but the history is the worst in all FF history and I started skip all movie scenes after some hours. FF 13 is linear and boring . FF 13-2 is better(you can recruit almost all monsters) but they tried to do a tales of symphonia dawn of new world  clone and  they failed. FF 13 lightining returns is a little less boring( there's dlc to use aerith and cloud outfit!!!). They stopped focus on history and movie scenes but there's no monster recruitable this time so wasn't too good. In resume don't buy FF for ps3. Just rent for some days and you can finished around 25-30 hours each game. there's no replay value.
Anyway after I buy vandal hearts 3 I go give my feedback bro :ninja:

Btw: Another game you must play is shadow of mordor. Nemesis system is amazing.

Would be nice a game inspired only with this major battles..

Another thing: To who don't know some months ago Square released a mini game from FF 7 to android/ios ->Final Fantasy 7 G-Bike.

another game that I recommend is master of monsters disciples of gaia from psone. Because it's the closest of brigandine that you go find for playstation

I played some games last weeks of ps3 and there's one that I need to share.
Dead island riptide.
Huge maps to explore, lots of weapons customization and skills
in my opinion is the best zombie game ever. Imagine gta + resident evil = dead island riptide.
Title: Re: Recommended Games!

I checked out Dead Island and long while back and it seemed disturbingly violent because the zombies were so human. They weren't even "evil zombie cult humans" but realistic regular people. Going around slaughtering masses of them kind of gave me the creeps. Are the enemies in Riptide still realistic "average people"?

This has been recommended to me in the past by MasterTaffer. It looks really interesting, and the story seems really well done... Something inspirational.
I know that funcom also released AoC (Age of Conan) which has some really nice artwork, which shares a similar style to my very early concepts.

Oh, on a side note, Bethesda have announced that TES:Online will become free to play, also news on a console release can be found here. (http://www.polygon.com/2015/1/21/7865919/the-elder-scrolls-online-release-date-ps4-xbox-one-subscription-free-tamriel-unlimited)

I didn't check dead island 1 yet but in riptide there's few kinds of zombies and most are too much human like u said. Some zombies even atack you with weapons and is deadly.  But imo I prefer this zombies in riptide than in last of us or resident evil.

VH3 is pretty bad.  The character development is non existent, the story is weak, and the leveling up / balancing is pretty badly executed.  The gameplay and actual battles on the maps are simple enough, and enjoyable.  The big turn off for me was that every single skill / spell you do levels up.  Want to cast AGI UP on an ally, you just got 20% EXP in your AGI UP spell...  Could be cool, but at the end of the day you end up with all of your characters being nearly identical, as its pretty easy to catch up on buffs at the end of a fight when you are in control.  I probably put around 15 hours into it and didn't bother to finish.  Came across as very low budget, shame they had to put the Vandal Hearts name on that.

Has anyone here played Kartia before?  PS1 strategy game that I never picked up.  Curious how that compares with the likes of my favorites (Brigandine, Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle.)

Also, Suikoden 2 appears to be available on PSN for PS3.  This is my favorite game of all time and its not even close.  RPG perfection.  This was extraordinarily hard to find, i think $500 on Amazon.  I would play Suikoden 1 first to get a good background for it.  Very simple, enjoyable 20 hour RPG with 108 recruitable characters and a story /  plot ahead of its time.  Suikoden 3 was also amazing for PS3, but 4 and 5 were kind of stinkers.

There is a freeware game called Exit Fate that is built on the same graphics engine as Suikoden 2, and very highly inspired by Suikoden.  75 recruitable characters, your own castle, a very deep and twisting plot.  It ranks in the top 10 RPGs i have ever played, and thats pretty remarkable for a free game that didnt come from a major studio.  I highly recommend anyone who prefers PS1 era RPGs to check this one out.

That looks really neat! It's gotten stellar reviews from lots of people. HERE's (http://site.scfworks.com/?page_id=10%2F) a link to the author's site.

I have played Koudelka and didn't like it. It's grid based, but the battle maps are really small and there isn't any strategy involved. The story was just mediocre. I believe I read that it had problems in development and that is was released unfinished. That what it feels like; the beginning shell of a game without any complexity to flesh it out. Overall I'd rate it about 3/10.

HwitVlf if you had to do a top 10 of PS through PS3 strategy games, what would your ranking be?  Its hard for me to put in order, but it would look something like

Brigandine
Tactics Ogre
Vandal Hearts 1
Vanguard Bandits
Ogre Battle
Growlanser 2/3 (pretty much the same game)
Final Fantasy Tactics

I just recently stumbled into XCOM and was pretty obsessed.  I have probably close to 1000 hours logged in Civilzation IV, and it has that feel to it at the beginning where there is just such an overwhelming amount of things you need to work on and invest in, and striking that balance is crucial.  It suffers the same late game fate as Civilization too, in that once you navigate through the early challenge and get ahead, its pretty much cruise control and you can lose motivation to finish.

I can't say enough good things about Exit Fate.  Since it's freeware, the author was able to use video game soundtracks from other games (Uses Suikoden V, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Xenogears songs heavily.)  I am a musician and I really enjoy video game music from games I have played, and hearing certain songs used in a new emotional setting was pretty exciting.  Exit Fate actually inspired me to work on my own RPG Maker game.  I will finish it (one day) and post it here.  I have about 120 hours in, a really cool plot, and an amazing soundtrack (mostly borrowed from Romancing SaGa, Suikoden, Brigandine LOF, etc.)  I just need to really tinker with the event scripting and work out any potential bugs, which is time consuming as a first timer.

Wow, Ps1- PS3 is a big range. Many games are good in different ways so it's a little hard to compare. But probably something like this:

Vandal Hearts (sorry, just a tad more than Brig :sweatdrop: )
Brigandine
Azure Dreams
Final Fantasy Tactics
Arc the Lad 2
Hogs of War (it's really turn based strategy without the grid)
Vanguard Bandits
Front Mission 5
Tactics Ogre
Stella Deus
La Pucelle
Rhapsody (It was simple, but unusual and I liked that)

Azure Dreams that high?  Thats been on my watch list for a long time, will most certainly have to pick that up.

Glad to see you list Vanguard Bandits too.  That's such an enjoyable game, with exactly the right amount of customization, and a lot of optional challenges (winning what seems like unwinnable battles early on.)  I havent explored all the endings and different paths yet, so that one is due for a revisit soon.

The deathblows in VH1 with the insane amounts of blood are still awesome.  Ditto on the unwinnable fight challenges.  When you get ambushed in that city by the entire Crimson Guard, winning that fight instead of escaping is incredibly gratifying.  Probably similar to saving Ridley in Suikoden 2 when he gets ambushed outside of Radat.

I love games where you have a chance to "win what seems like unwinnable battles". Finding a strategy to overcome impossible odds should be a component in every strategy game in my opinion.

Azure Dreams wouldn't necessarily appeal to everyone. It has two gameplay modes, one where you fight your way up a tower and the other where you walk around your village and interact with its citizens. The tower mode is challenging because your progress is only limited by how brave you're willing to be. If you keep going, you might find a great item but you might also get in over your head and lose it all.  The town sequences offer a nice change of pace and have some charming characters. It doesn't have the same complexity as a game like FF tactics, but I thought it had more character and was more endearing overall.

I played azure dreams in 90's for psx and for gb. Was a good game too and similiar to monster seed.
I'm playing at this moment civilization revolution for ps3. I finished in main history and was easy and fun. Now I'm playing sceneries at king dificult the atack of huns. Think something hard...every country want kill u...everytime they demand tecnology or war against u. But this make me play the game even more because is fun XD

HwitVlf that sounds a lot like the Lost Dungeon in Lufia II.  That dungeon alone makes an already awesome game legendary.  Emu's make it a lot easier with the ability to save, but man in the SNES days you were really something if you could beast it out.

Duredure, if you like the feel of Civ Rev, I would suggest Civ IV.  Its a lot more complicated with a tough learning curve but the lower difficulties make it an enjoyable game as you learn.  I have insane amounts of hours logged into Civ IV, and I can beat most Monarch level difficulty games easily, but Emperor difficulty I would need a decent civilization and a workable starting location.  Past that I'd get crushed.  The craziest thing is that even after all this playing time, each new round I pick up new ideas and new efficiencies.

Hello

I always played dynstaty warriors series but I didn't liked too much(I only finished with 1-2 characters and gave up playing).
Warriors orochi 3 ultimate is totally diferent and is the best inovation in the series.
I'm around 100 hours of gameplay  in warriors orochi 3 ultimate.

This game is soo good.
-123 characters.
- good history(You don't follow a linear history like the previous games)
- Good craft and orb system.
-Amazing new modes ( all modes are conected to history mode data base. So if one character yours in history mode is lv 40 in all modes is lv 40 too):
1- duel mode ( 1p x 2p or 1p x cpu)
Playing in history mode you unlock cards to use here.
This mode is a basic "street fighter 2 " plus using cards to special effects.
This mode give experience, money and crystals to craft material in history mode.
2- Battlefields - Create your map
Didn't tested yet but you can create any map with any way you want.
3-  Gauntlet-
Ok here's is the fan in this game:
This is a rpg mode for warriors orochi 3 ultimate. It's very hard and fun.
Remember that all characters database is conected to all modes. So is better you level up a little yours characters in history mode and play gauntlet later.
Gauntlet has lots unique itens(not found in history mode)

So my recommendation is :

If you like or no the dynasty warriors series give a chance to this game.
It's unique.

Hello

I'm playing some pc games in the last 3 months (my ps3 is in stand by for now).
Of all games there's one game that people need to know
It's called Lords of Xulima. It's an unique game. It's easy to play and the tutorial is very helpful. I finished it with 65 hours of gameplay.

Checked back here for new suggestions, and just added LoX to my wish list on steam.  looks cool!

Has anyone here played Banner Saga?  It's the first game in a long time that I beat and instantly played again.  Awesome turn based strategy game with a satisfying difficulty level (on hard) and a really great setting and story.  Part 1 of eventually 3 is out now, and its about 13 hours to complete a run but HUGE replayability (dont do your first run through with a guide or anything.)

Hello all!

I stop playing pc games for now and came back for my ps3.

I never enjoy the metal gears solid serie but I Played anyway. I bought metal gear solid 5 phantom pain for ps3 and I have to say that I'm surprised.
They did a perfect game for ps4 but to ps3 too.

-Graphic is amazing
-History is amazing
-Open world(very very huge)
-lots customization and also the mother base build is perfect too!
-the gameplay in my opinion is good as assassin creed but without get in boring.
- There's no slowdown even with lots soldiers on screen.

Honestly I didn't saw nothing bad in this game and that's because this people are enjoying too.
Finaly GTA5 found a rival in open world genre!

Too bad that Hideo Kojima got fired of Konami and this is the last metal gear with his touch.

Hey guys,

I had to go out of my way and come back here to recommend one specific game, Eador: Masters of the Broken World.

Its the perfect combination of Brigandine and Civilization.  Its available for download on Steam.  I racked up 350 hours within 2 months.  Very cool stuff, and definitely has a strong Brigandine feel in the variety of units.
